There are budding artists, artists with verve, and singular artists. Pierre Malbec is already singular by virtue of his career… No art academies here, but the school of life, the real thing. He began by discovering objects that reflect form and function, but also the memory of a moment in a lifetime.
The period that preoccupies him is that of the post-war period, a vast laboratory of all-out research that saw the birth of the finest achievements of a revolutionary and bygone modernism.
The eye thus sharpened can pass through the looking glass and become a medium conducive to creation. His territory is now that of an archaeology in the making…
Pierre Malbec is not a sculptor in the true sense of the word, but rather a “structurer” of matter. He has the natural talent of an artist who doesn’t bother with fashionable concepts, but works in silence on an authentic inner quest that suits his work so well. In addition, he is an outstanding colorist, who takes up in two dimensions the forms he has freshly erected. He gives free rein to his nature, the purity of figurative abstractions.
Each sculpture has its own response on the stretcher, where yellow and red ochres, blues and browns are once again structured by skilful scraping, revealing the flatness of nascent color in the form that interweaves into a primary geometry that speaks for itself…
He also ventures into the creation of useful objects that resonate with the teachings of twentieth-century master builders.
